>>According to AsianPacificHeritage.gov, “May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
>>“Like most commemorative months, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress. In 1977 Reps. Frank Horton of New York introduced House Joint Resolution 540 to proclaim the first ten days in May as Pacific/Asian American Heritage Week. In the same year, Senator Daniel Inouye introduced a similar resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 72. Neither of these resolutions passed, so in June 1978, Rep. Horton introduced House Joint Resolution 1007. This resolution proposed that the President should “proclaim a week, which is to include the seventh and tenth of the month, during the first ten days in May of 1979 as ‘Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week.’” This joint resolution was passed by the House and then the Senate and was signed by President Jimmy Carter on October 5, 1978 to become Public Law 95-419. This law amended the original language of the bill and directed the President to issue a proclamation for the “7 day period beginning on May 4, 1979 as ‘Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week.’” During the next decade, presidents passed annual proclamations for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week until 1990 when Congress passed Public Law 101-283 which expanded the observance to a month for 1990. Then in 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450 which annually designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month >>“The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.” >>The Pine Bluff High School Library celebrates with social media posts of information about Asian and Pacific Islander American history, links to articles about those who have made a difference, and information about authors on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as books by Asian and Pacific Islander authors throughout the library. Check them out! We could not let the entire month of April end without trying our hand at poetry. For the next seven days you are asked to poet-try some poetry. Use the links below to explore a poet, a poem from that poet and an activity related to poetry. IF you have not signed up for our poetry event, please do so. The library has listed a couple of tools below to help you KNOW and GROW in your knowledge of this iconic figure for social justice and civil rights.
Today you can.... 1) Listen to his words.
4) Read and Visit (Virtually) #NAHM Native American Heritage Month 2021 (Nov. 1-30, 2021) Click the picture below to use the virtual shelf. According to the Library of Congress, “The first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday. “In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 ‘National American Indian Heritage Month.’ Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including ‘Native American Heritage Month’ and ‘National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month’) have been issued each year since 1994.” According to the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), “The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. The Pine Bluff High School Library celebrates with social media posts of information about Native American history, links to articles about Native American people who have made a difference, and poems by Native American authors on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as books by Native American authors throughout the library. This year the school library is excited to offer our students opportunities to get excited, gather, read and be creative. Library clubs and activities are times for you to meet others, learn something new, share your view and develop leadership skills. Take a moment to look over |
